Her 2005 hit “Pon the Replay” and her 2011 single “Man Down” were both hit songs inspired by Rihanna’s Caribbean roots.īut the lyrics really aren’t gibberish at all. It wasn’t a particularly surprising choice for Rihanna the singer has leaned on her heritage before in some of her biggest fan favorites. Rihanna teamed up with Drake for the single and video, mixing an old-school Jamaican dancehall beat and hypnotic lyrics to create a smash hit that feels more reggae than crossover pop. Only The Beatles and Mariah Carey have more hit singles, Billboard reported. “Work” is Rihanna’s 14th song to take the number one spot on Billboard’s Top 100 list, breaking her tie with Michael Jackson for the third-most number one singles. The futuristic single, a mix of techno and dancehall, is one of the most popular singles on Rihanna’s new album, Anti, according to Billboard magazine. So, what had American fans and music critics so confused? Rihanna’s “Work” lyrics use Jamaican patois and Creole - and rather than applauding the obvious nod to her Caribbean heritage, some unfairly blasted the Barbados-born singer for speaking what they called “gibberish” on her single. Still, some of her listeners felt lost listening to the lyrics. The biggest take away – If you are a twin, Drake will still choose you.Rihanna’s latest hit single, “Work,” has become one of the biggest singles of the year, and reviews have been pretty positive overall. I can see the relationship part in the lyrics, but the talk about work still confuses me. I found this interesting and forgave her for confusing me.Īccording to Wikipedia, I guess the song is about working so you can have money and insecure relationships. I guess she does this in other songs and I’ve just never picked up on it. I found a website explaining the song sounds like gibberish because of Rihanna’s Barbadian heritage and her including her native accent/language in her music. I read the lyrics and still had no idea what the song meant and then went on to spend entirely too much time figuring it out. How many more shots until you’re rolling?Īnd gimme me all the work, work, work, work, work, work Rolling, rolling, rolling, rolling, rolling Oh, yeah, I spilled all my emotions tonight, I’m sorry I don’t wanna rush into it, if it’s too soonīut I know you need to get done, done, done, done If you had a twin I would still choose you

The song has come back on a couple times and I desperately need to delete it because I now find it annoying. Take a listen:īy the time the second verse came on, I was back to singing what I figured was complete gibberish but enjoyed the beat.

I quickly realized I had no idea what the hell her and Drake were singing about and honestly couldn’t even tell if it was in english. All car singing and seated dancing came to a pause as I tried to register my thoughts toward the song. I was cruising down some beautiful New Zealand road when Rihanna’s song came on. So, I ended up adding both songs to my library because I had heard the Rihanna song before and remembered liking it. I guess maybe I could be embarrassed about that, but I’ve noticed I am too sensitive about my music taste and need to stop music shaming myself. I was looking for “Work from Home” by Fifth Harmony as is it a great sing along and dance in the car song, when I stumbled upon “Work”. I added “Work” by Rihanna to my music library while preparing for my New Zealand road trip kind of by accident.
